What type of Wrist pain are you experiencing?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Numbness in your fingers or hand
  • Weakness of fingers
  • Tend to drop things when holding
  • Tingling, and pain in your thumb and the first three fingers of your hand.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the median nerve which runs from the forearm into the hand becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. This results in pain, weakness, or numbness in the hand and wrist, radiating up the arm.

De Quervain's Tenosynovitis

  • Difficult to make a fist
  • Increasing pain near the base of your thumb
  • Swelling presented near the base of your thumb

Dequervain’s Tenosynovitis is a condition brought by irritation or inflammation of the wrist tendons at the base of the thumb. The inflammation causes the compartment around the tendon to swell and enlarge, making thumb and wrist movement painful.

Ganglion

  • The ganglion usually appears as a bump or mass that which appear over time or appear suddenly.
  • It may also get smaller in size and even go away, only to come back at another time.

A wrist ganglion is a swelling that generally occurs over the back of the hand or wrist. These are benign, fluid-filled capsules. Ganglions are not cancerous. Although they may grow in size, they will not spread to other parts of the body.

How Doctors know your medical condition?

X-rays

You may need to get X-rays of your wrist. The X-rays mostly help our specialist rule out other problems with the wrist joint.

Nerve Tests

Nerve tests, called EMGs, can help to determine the extent of nerve compression, and the location of the nerve compression.

MRI Scans

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is a special imaging test that uses magnetic waves to create pictures of the wrist in slices. The MRI scan shows tendons as well as bones.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound tests use high frequency sound waves to generate an image of the tissues below the skin. As the small ultrasound device is rubbed over the sore area, an image appears on a screen. This type of test can sometimes show problems with collagen degeneration.

What Doctors do to relieve your wrist pain?

Anti-inflammation Medication / Self Treatments

  • Resting the affected hand and wrist for at least 2 weeks, avoiding activities that may worsen symptoms.
  • Immobilizing the wrist in a splint to avoid further damage from twisting or bending.
  • Use cold packs when inflammation occurs. Applying cold packs can help to reduce swelling.
  • If the problem is caused by acute inflammation, anti-inflammatory medications  may give you some relief. If inflammation doesn’t go away, our specialist may inject the wrist with anti-inflammatory medication.

Surgery

  • Surgery may required for severe cases – arthroscopic surgery, open reduction and internal fixation / close reduction for fracture case, removal of ganglion and etc.
  • Many cysts (38-58%) disappear without any treatment at all. Ganglion treatments include using a needle to remove the cyst’s contents (aspiration). Surgical removal of the cyst is needed when the mass is painful, interferes with function especially when the dominant hand is involved, or causes numbness or tingling of the hand or fingers.
